Gestational Diabetes Diet

What Is It?

If your doctor has talked to you about a gestational diabetes diet, chances are good that he believes that you have gestational diabetes. Usually he has reached this decision based on a glucose tolerance test that he has given you or other tests that have pointed in this direction.  The diet has the goal of helping to control the amount of glucose within your blood stream at any time.  If this level of glucose does not remain at safe levels, your body could enter hyperglycemic shock which is dangerous to both you and your baby.  For this reason, if your doctor has recommended a gestational diabetes diet, you should do all that you can to follow it for the sake of yours and your baby's health.

Treatments For Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes can cause a number of complications for both you and the baby.  This means that if you have been diagnosised by this condition, your doctor is going to want to find a treatment option for you that happens right away.  The longer that he waits the more risk of diabetes complications you both have.  The goal of any treatment of gestational diabetes will be to balance the amount of glucose in your body to a normal level, or to the normal level of other pregnant women without any gestational diabetes.  One of the first considerations of this treatment is your diet.  In addition, your doctor may also require that you get enough physical activity that is safe for you both.  More so, your doctor may require you to check your glucose levels every day, or several times per day.  Some women have to have insulin injections during pregnancy so that their body will use the glucose correctly.

Your gestational diabetes diet is a balanced one.  You will need to follow basic, simple guidelines to provide yourself with the nutrition that you both need without compromising your symptom with too much glucose.  The first thing that this diet requires is an addition of additional fresh fruits and vegetables.  The more variety you get here, the better this will be for your situation.  You will need these as they contain nearly all of the nutrients your baby needs for development.

In addition to this, a very important point will be for you to limit the amount of fat that you consumer.  You should not take in more than 30 percent of your calories from fat.  This will make a marked difference in your overall health.  Yet another important part of this diabetes diet will be to keep your portion size under control.  By eating less food, you are putting less glucose into your system at any time and therefore adding protection for your baby.

In most cases, your doctor will give you a guideline that will include what you need to do for the gestational diabetes.  This will include how many of your calories should come from various food groups.  This is based on the fact that some foods turn into sugars much faster than others.  For example, carbohydrates will turn into sugars faster than proteins.  On the other hand, foods like sweets and sugary treats are going to hit the blood stream full force, making your glucose levels exceedingly risky for both you and the baby.  You may also want to meet with a dietician to talk about your portion control, and how losing weight may help you to consider your gestational diabetes.

With the help of your doctor, your can avoid any type of gestational diabetes complications by using a diet for gestational diabetes correctly.  Although it may seem limiting, it is the best way to protect you and your baby.
